What type of displays does ColorMunki work with?
The ColorMunki is a true spectrophotometer and can calibrate LCD, CRT and laptop displays with total precision. To build a profile for your CRT, simply select the "LCD" option in the ColorMunki software.
What other devices can ColorMunki calibrate?
ColorMunki is also able to calibrate or build profiles for RGB or CMYK printers and digital projectors. ColorMunki does not calibrate cameras or scanners or have profile editing capabilities. If you require this level of control then the i1XTreme would be a more suitable solution.
What is the difference between the ColorMunki Photo and the ColorMunki Design?
The ColorMunki Photo (black) and the ColorMunki Design (white) are identical in terms of hardware (see below for more details). However, there are differences between the two sets of software, the ColorMunki Photo software is also supplied on a CD.
The ColorMunki Photo’s printer profiling function offers image specific optimisation, plus grey balance, B&W and FleshTones enhancement options. A DigitalPouch image transportation function, which checks for appropriate viewing conditions on the recipient’s side before sending the image, is also featured. The ColorMunki Photo is shipped with Munsell colour libraries on-board, and additionally, PANTONE libraries are available for download once you have registered your product.
The ColorMunki Design’s printer profiling function features spot colour optimisation based on the specific needs of designers. The product is shipped with PANTONE libraries on-board, including the Matching System, Goe and PANTONE Fashion and Home, and additionally, Munsell colour libraries are available for download once you have registered your product.
Will ColorMunki calibrate dual monitors, or several monitors in a workgroup?
ColorMunki can calibrate dual monitors with ease, and gives before and after results. The ColorMunki software license allows activation on a maximum of three machines, so to calibrate a larger workgroup consider the i1Display 2, as i1Match software is licensed for unlimited use.
Does ColorMunki have fixed pre-sets or does it give you choices of white point setting for monitor calibration?
ColorMunki gives you three choices of white point – D65, D50 and Native. But don't worry if you don't know what a white point is; ColorMunki can choose the most appropriate setting for you.
Does ColorMunki profile all types of printer?
ColorMunki can build printer profiles for all desktop printers capable of printing A4 or US Letter sized output, including ink jet, dye-sublimation and laser, whether RGB or CMYK. ColorMunki does not currently support small format 15 x 10cm dye, sub or inkjet photo printers; however, this is under review with X-Rite, and support for these devices may be supported in future a release of the ColorMunki software, which would be made available as a download from the ColorMunki website.
I’m having trouble using the Profile Optimisation function. Am I doing something wrong?
Unfortunately some minor bugs have been detected in early versions of the ColorMunki software which have caused problems with this function for some users. To resolve this, we recommend you download the latest version of the software. Any further software updates will also be available from the Colour Confidence website.
What type of colour data does ColorMunki read and why is this important?
ColorMunki is a spectrophotometer and as such reads spectral colour data. This is in direct contrast to other competitive products which only emulates this data - making ColorMunki a more accurate device.
How many colour patches does ColorMunki read?
ColorMunki reads a total of 100 colour patches (2 sheets of 50). The second sheet is produced by the software in response to the readings from the first sheet, allowing it to detect the colour gamut of your printer and optimise it. With X-Rite’s new technology for patch reading and profile creation, the results from 100 patches are better than those of competitive solutions that read twice as many!
Does ColorMunki need to be calibrated?
As ColorMunki is a true spectrophotometer, it does need to be calibrated before each session of use. To do this it contains its own in-built calibration tile and the software will guide you through this process when required.
What is the AppSet feature?
Many people have tried to use previous colour management packages to create profiles for their devices but then get confused where they should place these profiles. AppSet takes the printer profile you create with ColorMunki and automatically configures the most common applications to use it automatically.
What programs does the ColorMunki AppSet feature work with?
The AppSet feature works with Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 2 and 3, inDesign and Quark. Photoshop Elements, Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture are not yet supported; however the profiles created by ColorMunki can of course be used in these applications – you just need to set them manually.
Is it still worth buying an i1 if I am a professional user?
Yes. ColorMunki is an excellent solution; however for greatest accuracy and control the i1 Pro device is still the industry standard for high-end colour management. If you are a professional user looking for the best possible results and the option to upgrade your system at a later date then you should consider an i1XTreme.
What is the warranty on the ColorMunki?
ColorMunki comes with a 2 year manufacturer’s return-to-base warranty. In the unlikely event of it developing a fault, you just need to contact us and we will give you instructions for returning it to a service department (you are responsible for the cost of carriage back to X-Rite).
Can I upgrade my ColorMunki?

However, X-Rite may release updated versions of the ColorMunki software; any updates will be available from our Downloads centre as soon as they are released.
There are no PANTONE/Munsell libraries with my ColorMunki. How do I access these?
On shipment the ColorMunki Design is supplied with PANTONE libraries and ColorMunki Photo with Munsell libraries. However, when you register your device with X-Rite you will receive the alternative set of libraries via e-mail.
